St. Augustine Carriage Tours
A horse-drawn carriage over brick streets in a city founded in 1565, the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the continental United States. St. Augustine carriage tours differ in who shares the seat and how the price is set: private or shared, per carriage or per person, a horse or an open cart, with extra rides in the Nights of Lights season.
Quick answerThe price, the pick and where the carriages wait
A private 45-minute horse-drawn carriage ride books online for $175 per carriage, and walk-up carriages also wait on the bayfront on Avenida Menendez. Only one operator, A Legacy Carriage, sells its carriage rides on the big booking platforms, and both of its rides are private, priced for the whole carriage rather than each rider. No walk-up price is published for this season, so ask the driver before you board. If a cart or trolley suits you better, guided cart tours on the same streets start at $32 per person.

Prefer ghost stories? The same operator runs a private ghost version past Huguenot and Tolomato cemeteries, also $175 per carriage
The most reviewed ride is the private electric cart tour, 90 minutes for up to 7 at $200 per cart, with 1,240 reviews
Walk-up carriages wait on the bayfront across from Meehan's Irish Pub, and the 2026 city rules cover the horses
The Nights of Lights season runs November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027, with trolley and cart rides through the lights
St. Augustine Carriage Tours and Rides Compared
The horse-drawn carriage rides come first, then the cart, trolley and holiday rides that cover the same streets when a carriage is not the right fit. Some prices here are per carriage, per cart or per row and others are per person, and each card says which, so check it before you compare. The booking platform handles payment, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start on every listing shown.

Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides: Book Online or Walk Up
There are two ways to a carriage seat in St. Augustine: a fixed-price private ride booked online, or the walk-up stand on the bayfront. The options below come from the booking listings and the operators' own pages, with last season's holiday prices shown as they were published.

Where to Book and What It Costs
The online carriage rides are private, 45 minutes and priced for the whole carriage, so a family of four pays the same as a couple. The walk-up carriages wait on the bayfront across from Meehan's Irish Pub on Avenida Menendez and set the price at the stand. Last season's Nights of Lights prices and The Tasting Tours' own rate come from the operators' pages and are labelled by season and source.

What a Ride Is Actually Like
A standard historic carriage tour covers about two miles in roughly 45 minutes between the Bridge of Lions and the Castillo de San Marcos, per Country Carriages' listing. Carriages hold up to four or five guests depending on the operator, and they are open-air, so brick and cobblestone stretches make the ride bumpy, which The Tasting Tours warns may not suit people with back problems. The online carriage rides meet at the corner of Cathedral Place and Charlotte Street, and the guide calls you on arrival to find you.
Remember that the price covers the whole carriage, not each rider, so splitting $175 across a group changes the math fast.
The 2026 Rules and the Horses
The city re-licensed the trade in 2026. In February the City Commission voted unanimously not to renew the Country Carriages franchise, which had held 10 of the city's 15 licenses since 2004. On July 13 the commission approved a rewrite of the Vehicles for Hire and Franchise ordinances, adding animal health, welfare and safety rules for carriage horses and requiring drivers to hold a valid Florida driver's license and pass background checks.
On October 12 a 3-2 vote let carriages keep operating for three more years, with 10 stalls: 7 medallions awarded to qualified applicants and 3 filled by lottery, at an annual medallion fee of $1,000. Supporters trace the carriage tradition to 1877 and the St. Augustine Transfer Company. As reported by a 2018 Flagler College student article, the code calls for 15-minute breaks between tours, water and food, licensed health care, no more than eight hours of work without a 1.5-hour break, and no work at 95°F (35°C) or higher or at a heat index of 105.
Whether the July 2026 rewrite kept that heat rule is not published. Ask the driver about water and rest breaks, and in summer book an evening slot when the heat has dropped.
These guided tours follow the carriage streets in an open golf cart or electric cart. They run 1 hour to 90 minutes, longer than a carriage ride. Where these rides go on things to do in St. Augustine.

Compare the Cart Tours
The table below compares the bookable golf cart and electric cart tours from their listings, with the price, ride time, group size and meeting point each listing gives. A carriage ride covers the core streets in about 45 minutes, while the cart tours run 1 hour to 90 minutes, so a cart gives you more time on the same ground.

The Private Electric Cart Tour is the only private cart here. It is priced per cart for 1 to 7 people, riders must be 7 and up, and with 1,240 reviews it is the most reviewed ride in this guide. The other three are shared and priced per person.
The Waterfront Golf Cart Tour runs from the Plaza along the bayfront past Castillo de San Marcos and the Bridge of Lions to Mission Nombre de Dios, then back through downtown past Aviles Street, with photos included. The Private Electric Cart Tour focuses on the colonial walled city, taking in Castillo de San Marcos, Flagler's hotels and churches, the Oldest House, the Plaza and Aviles Street over 90 minutes. The Guided Golf Cart Tour starts at the city garage at 1 Cordova St, which makes it easy if you are already parked there, and covers Mission Nombre de Dios, the Castillo, Flagler College, the Cathedral Basilica and the Plaza.
The Historical Tour starts at 134 Riberia Street by San Sebastian Marina, where a printed ticket on your dashboard gets you all-day free parking, and covers Flagler's Hotel Alcazar, now the Lightner Museum, and the city's Catholic history.

The Old Town Trolley and the Red Train
Two multi-stop vehicles cover the historic district on a fixed schedule. They are shared, timed and unhurried in a different way from a carriage.

The Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley
The Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley from Historic Tours of America sells a 1 or 2-day ticket at $41 per person on the listing. It runs 22 stops over a 90-minute loop, with trolleys every 15 to 20 minutes from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily. Admission to the St. Augustine History Museum is included.
You share the trolley with other riders, so there are no private seats and no picking your own route. You hop off at any stop and catch the next trolley, which suits a full day of sightseeing.
The Red Train and How It Differs
Ripley's Red Train Tours runs a 60-minute narrated roundtrip departing hourly from 19 San Marco Avenue, per Ripley's. The trains are open-air with bench seating, a free poncho is handed out in rain, and tickets must be booked online in advance. The route passes more than 100 points of interest and can go down Aviles Street.
A trolley or train differs from a carriage in three ways. You share it with other riders on a fixed schedule, it covers far more stops, and there is no horse. A booked carriage ride is private and runs 45 minutes.

The Season and the Crowds
The 2026-27 Nights of Lights runs from November 21, 2026 to January 18, 2027. One festival release gives the last day as Monday, January 18, 2027, while the city page labels the same date a Sunday, so confirm before you book a late-season ride. Light-Up Night is Saturday November 21, 2026, with the lights switched on at 6:30 PM at the Plaza de la Constitución.
More than three million white lights cover the historic district, and viewing them on foot is free with no ticket needed. Weekends are the busiest nights and the city suggests visiting Monday through Thursday for shorter waits, less traffic and easier parking. Bring warm clothes: the rides are open-air, and St. Francis Inn's blog warns winter evening temperatures can drop into the 40s or 50s F.
Getting There in the Season
The city runs a free Park & Ride shuttle during Nights of Lights, and the 2026-27 lots and schedules were not yet published. Last season it ran 1:00 to 11:00 PM on 33 days from three lots: Broudy's Lot at 198 West King St, the North San Marco Lot at 301 San Marco Ave, and the County Health Department at 200 San Sebastian View. On shuttle days last season the downtown garage charged $40.00 for entries at or after 1:00 PM, and $20.00 otherwise.
Park carefully: resident-only parking zones near downtown fine vehicles without a resident tag $100.00 during the season.
None of these rides picks you up from your hotel. Every one starts at a fixed meeting point, so the parking decision comes first. Every lot and rate on parking in St. Augustine.

The Garage, Meters and the Free Bus
The Historic Downtown Parking Facility at 1 Cordova Street holds 1,200 spaces and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The city prices it at $20 per vehicle per entry from 7 AM to 5 PM and $5 from 5 PM to 9 PM, though Visit St. Augustine's guide calls it $20 per day, and the off-peak $5 rate does not apply during Nights of Lights and several festivals. City meters and pay stations cost $2.50 per hour for non-residents, with 3-hour limits on streets and 4-hour limits in lots.
Meters are free before 8:00 AM and after 9:00 PM Monday to Saturday, before 1:00 PM and after 9:00 PM on Sundays, and free on national holidays. The ParkStAug app works throughout city limits on iOS and Android and lets you add meter time remotely. If you would rather not drive at all, the free STAR Circulator bus runs daily 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
The carriage routes stick to the oldest streets, so the same landmarks come up on almost every ride. Here is what each one is and when it was built. More on Castillo de San Marcos and the historic district.
Built 1672-1695
Castillo de San Marcos
Construction of this coquina fortress began in 1672 and the core was finished in 1695, making it the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. It sits on the bayfront at 1 South Castillo Drive. Several rides pass its walls, including the Waterfront Golf Cart Tour.
Opened 1927
Bridge of Lions
The Bridge of Lions opened in 1927 and carries State Road A1A over the Matanzas River for 1,545 feet. It is named for two marble Medici lion copies. The walk-up carriages wait on the bayfront between the bridge and the Castillo, see carriage rides.
Laid out 1573
Plaza de la Constitución
The Plaza was laid out in 1573 under Spanish Royal Ordinances and became a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Its Constitution Monument obelisk dates to 1813. Nearly every ride in the catalog goes past or through the Plaza.
Parish 1565
Cathedral Basilica
The parish was founded in 1565 and is described as the oldest Christian congregation in the contiguous United States. The current building went up between 1793 and 1797. The Guided Golf Cart Tour passes it.
Built 1888
Flagler College
Flagler College occupies the Ponce de Leon Hotel, built in 1888 by Henry Flagler and now a National Historic Landmark. The college was founded in 1968. Carriage rides pass by without entry, like the Carriage Ghost Tour.
Hotel Alcazar 1887
Lightner Museum
The building was completed in 1887 as the Hotel Alcazar, designed by Carrere and Hastings, and once held the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Otto Lightner opened the museum there in 1948. The Private Electric Cart Tour starts from the parking lot behind it.

Nights of Lights season, busiest of the year
Heat and the Horses
July highs average 32.8°C (91.0°F). A 2018 Flagler College student article reports the city code gives carriage horses 15-minute breaks between tours, and that horses may not work more than eight hours without a 1.5-hour break, nor at 95°F or at a heat index of 105. Whether the July 2026 ordinance rewrite changed that heat rule is not stated.
In summer, book an early or late slot to ride in the cooler hours. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and every listing here cancels free to 24 hours before the start. The carriage listings also refund a ride cancelled for bad weather, see the pick.
Crowds and Timing
Weekends and the holiday season are the busiest times, and carriage reservations are especially popular near Christmas. The city suggests visiting Monday through Thursday for shorter waits, less traffic and easier parking. From June through August, Thursday evenings bring Concerts in the Plaza at the gazebo, which adds foot traffic downtown.
For holiday-season planning, see Nights of Lights rides and parking. Nights of Lights brings the heaviest traffic of the year from November 21, 2026, when Light-Up Night starts at 4:00 PM and the lights go on at 6:30 PM at the Plaza.
A few checks before you pay make the difference between a smooth ride and a frustrating one.
Do
Do check whether the price is per carriage or per person, because the bookable carriage rides charge $175 per whole carriage while the cart tours charge from $32 per person.
Do note the meeting point before you set out, because the carriage rides start at the corner of Cathedral Place and Charlotte Street and the golf cart tours start at spots including 1 Cordova Street, where you can also park.
Do bring a jacket for winter evenings, because winter low temperatures average 8.8-10.1°C (47.8-50.2°F) and the carriages are open-air.
Do book Nights of Lights rides ahead, because the holiday trolley and cart rides sell out and reservations are required.
Do ask the driver about the horse's breaks, because the city code as reported in 2018 requires 15-minute breaks between tours and rest in extreme heat.
Don't
Don't expect to go inside the cemeteries or Flagler College on a carriage ride, because the ghost tour lists Huguenot Cemetery, Tolomato Cemetery and Flagler College as pass-by stops with no entry.
Don't count on cheap garage parking in the holiday season, because the downtown garage charged $40.00 per entry on shuttle days at or after 1:00 pm in 2025-26.
Don't book a horse-drawn carriage if a bumpy ride on brick is a problem for your back, because operators warn the cobblestone streets make the ride bumpy, and an electric cart is the smoother option.
Don't park in resident-only zones, because near downtown those neighborhoods fine vehicles without a resident tag $100.00 during Nights of Lights.
Is a St. Augustine Carriage Tour Worth It
An honest weighing of a horse-drawn carriage against the carts and trolleys that cover the same streets.
What we genuinely like
+The slow pace of a horse suits the narrow old streets of a city founded in 1565.
+A private carriage means your party only, with no shared rows.
+A live guide gives history or ghost stories in person for the whole ride.
+Free cancellation to 24 hours before the start on every ride in the catalog.
+When a horse does not suit, electric carts from $32 per person and the hop-on hop-off trolley cover the same landmarks.
The honest downsides
−The carriage rides that book online have few reviews so far, 3 and 1.
−The carriage price covers the whole carriage, so for two people it costs more than a per-person cart tour.
−Carriages and most carts are open-air, and July highs average 32.8°C (91.0°F).
−Holiday traffic and parking are heavy, and the downtown garage charged $40.00 per entry on shuttle days in 2025-26.
−The brick and cobblestone streets make for a bumpy ride.
Who it's NOT for: Not for travelers who need a smooth, enclosed, climate-controlled ride or who want to go inside the landmarks rather than pass them.
Which Ride Should You Pick
Match the ride to your group and your date.
If you want a horse-drawn carriage for just the two of you
→ Book the Carriage History Tour, a private 45-minute ride at $175 for the whole carriage.
If you want ghost stories instead of plain history
→ The Carriage Ghost Tour runs the same private 45-minute format past Huguenot and Tolomato cemeteries.
If you want the ride with the most reviews behind it
If you want a full day of sightseeing without moving your car
→ The Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley sells a 1 or 2-day ticket with 22 stops and museum entry included.
What Riders Said After the Tour
★★★★★★★★★★
Sandy was our tour guide and she was excellent! She made the tour fun and was very informative regarding the history of the city and recommending places to visit and restaurants to eat. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and would recommend this more intimate tour over the larger passenger tours.

We saw so many parts of the city. We enjoyed our drivers stories and detailed information. As it is hard to find parking and if you do it is costly, we used the hop on hop off feature throughout the day.

It was a great way to explore the town with the beautiful lights and decorations. I liked that it was very interactive especially for the children. The tour was conveniently located to their nearby parking suggestion. Definitely recommend this activity for the whole family.

St. Augustine Carriage Tours: Your Questions
How much is a carriage ride in St. Augustine?
The bookable carriage rides, the Carriage History Tour and the Carriage Ghost Tour, each cost $175 per carriage (private) for 45 minutes. Walk-up operators on the bayfront set their own prices, which are not published. See the full breakdown in the comparison table.
How long is a carriage ride in St. Augustine?
The bookable private rides last 45 minutes. Walk-up operators list rides of about 40 to 45 minutes, and Country Carriages described its standard historic tour as two miles in about 45 minutes. Times vary by traffic, so allow for it. Details are in the catalog.
Where do the carriages leave from?
The bookable rides start at the corner of Cathedral Place and Charlotte Street. Walk-up carriages wait on the bayfront across from Meehan's Irish Pub on Avenida Menendez, and some reserved tours leave from the downtown parking facility at 1 Cordova Street. Parking is covered in parking and start points.
Can you do a carriage ride during Nights of Lights?
Yes. Last season Old City Carriages charged $200.00 for up to four adults or $250.00 for up to seven on a 45-minute nightly ride, and Country Carriages charged $175.00 for up to four on 30 minutes. The private Carriage History Tour books online all season, and these rides run only through the lights: the Nights of Lights Trolley and the Nights of Lights Electric Cart.
Are the carriage horses treated well, and what are the rules?
The trade is regulated. A 2018 Flagler College article reports the city code requires 15-minute breaks between tours and bars horses from working at 95°F or at a heat index of 105. In 2026 the city re-licensed the trade with new animal welfare rules and a 3-2 vote for a three-year term. The full picture is in horse-drawn carriage rides.
Do you need to book a carriage ride ahead?
For the bookable rides, yes, reserve online to hold a slot, and free cancellation runs to 24 hours before the start. Walk-up carriages on the bayfront take riders without reservations, but holiday-season reservations are popular and dates near Christmas are busiest. Practical checks are listed in tips before booking.
Is there a ghost carriage tour in St. Augustine?
Yes. The Carriage Ghost Tour is a private 45-minute horse-drawn ride at $175 per carriage, passing Plaza de la Constitución, Huguenot Cemetery, Tolomato Cemetery and Flagler College, all as pass-bys. If you would rather ride without horses, the Nights of Lights Electric Cart covers similar streets.
Book the private 45-minute Carriage History Tour at $175 per carriage, with free cancellation to 24 hours before the start.
